One thing I love most about natural healing is after you start to acquire the ingredients you need you soon find you always have something useful on hand for any situation. The more you research and learn what ingredients do for the body the more you are able to connect the dots — and sometimes come up with something different. I’ve been making homemade decongestant shower disk for a long time. You can google it and get dozens of recipes. Then I thought, what else can I do with this? My answer was …well, a lot!
How To Make A Shower Disk
You Will Need:
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Cupcake Pan (Or another pan of choice)
- Rosemary Essential Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil
First, take your baking soda and add it to a bowl and grab something to mix with.
Slowly add water until you get a paste. You don’t want it to be too runny because then your disks take longer to dry (and are more likely to crumble). Then add your oils. I do around 15-20 drops of each. Mix these in.
You can now press your mixture into your mold or pan. If you want to easily be able to remove them from a muffin pan you can use a liner. I had high hopes for these pretty snowflakes. However, I was impatient and didn’t let them really harden all the way…so we have the pretty balls pictured on the top. They work just as well, just far less pleasing to the eye. Sometimes you have to improvise. To finish, you can let them set out for around 24 hours or bake them at bake at 350F for 20 minutes or so.
And there you have it! The far less pretty but still totally useful bath disk…um..ball.
To use: Pop a disk in the bottom of the shower or on the ledge (I’ve found they work just as well but last longer there). Be sure to store them in an airtight container.
The Twist
So, here’s the fun part. Just because I use these for decongestant purposes doesn’t mean I can’t use the main idea for something else. Try these options:
- In need of some relaxation but don’t have time for a bath? Add a lavender and clary sage disk to your shower!
- Just add lemon: If you wanted a clean, uplifting smell you could just add lemon to your disk.
- Rosemary and orange: You could add these two for a pick me up.
The combinations and possibilities are endless. Just make sure you know what oil you are using and how you might react to it. For instance, peppermint can sometimes cause itching and watering eyes in a situation like this. Certain medical conditions don’t react well with certain oils.

Hi!
I have tried countless recipes for these discs and every one that I have tried has resulted in a blob of white stuff that solidifies well, until it hits the shower and then it disappears in less than 30 seconds and has NO decongestant type qualities to it. Any suggestions?
How much baking soda to start with, thanks!
