When it’s beautiful outside, summer colds are annoying and inconvenient, especially when they get in the way of vacations and activities. No one likes to be sick in the summer.

Summer colds, just like winter ones, are caused by viruses. The big difference between summer and winter colds is the way we respond to them. In the winter, we’re more likely to stay under the covers and rest. In the summer, our busy schedules make rest easier said than done.

How long your cold lasts depends on your immune system, based on what you put in your body and what type of activities you partake in.

10 Natural Remedies for a Summer Cold

Many people turn to over-the-counter and prescription medications to treat symptoms. Though these drugs may relieve symptoms in the short-term, you are loading your body full of toxins and nasty ingredients. Relief can come naturally.

Here are a few natural remedies to help ease the symptoms of a summer cold:

1) Neti Pot

If you’re experiencing nasal congestion, flush out your nose and sinuses with a saline solution. Neti pots are inexpensive and available at most health food stores.

2) Humidifier or Diffuser

Using a humidifier or diffuser can help with congestion and open up airways. Better yet, add some eucalyptus, peppermint or rosemary essential oil.

3) Decongesting Foods

Eating foods that fight stuffiness, like horseradish, curry, garlic and cayenne pepper, can help relieve congestion.

4) Apple Cider Vinegar

To help with sinus drainage, mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink.

5) Vitamin C

Vitamin C can help repair body tissue and provides antioxidants. Look beyond oranges to add vitamin C to your diet. Papayas, red bell peppers, broccoli, kale and strawberries are packed with vitamin C.

6) Echinacea

Echinacea was first used in Native American healing. It can boost the immune system by improving the ability of white cells to fend of germs and avoid them taking hold in your body. As soon as you start noticing symptoms, you should begin taking Echinacea.

7) Ginger

Ginger is a natural antiviral and a powerful antioxidant used to sooth the stomach, fight inflammation, stimulate circulation and fight infections. Herbalists in China have been prescribing ginger tea for centuries.

8) Turmeric

Supplements can come as an extract, in tinctures or in powdered form. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and can help relieve nasal inflammation.

9) Hydration

Your immune system will only function most effectively if you keep hydrated. Thirst is actually your body’s way of warning of dehydration, so drink before you are thirsty. In addition to water herbal tea, coconut water, broth, fruits and vegetables are great ways to stay hydrated. Avoid caffeine, which is actually dehydrating.
